for April's End of Month Theme Adam chose Bands the Other Person Got You Into. he picks a band i got him into, i pick a band he got me into.
i went with This Heat. he first brought up This Heat for his February End of Month Theme post, where he talked about their first album. i then chose that album for a Crossover in March. (check out his post and my post) both of us really dug the album.

Deceit is their 2nd full length and is quite different. while it's still very experimental it's more rock oriented. this is probably where people started seeing them as a post-punk band. singing is waaay more prevalent on this album. on the self titled there were only a couple tracks that had vocals while the rest were experimental instrumentals, here it's the opposite. there are only 2 tracks that don't have vocals. the range of vocals is all over the place as all 3 band members sing/scream/chant/whatever, sometimes all at once.
the album sounds fantastic, all the crazy instrumentation and noise comes through perfectly. this album could've been made yesterday.
i liked this album every bit as much as i liked the first, probably even a bit more. so thank you adam, for bringing these English weirdos into my life.

so it's crossover time again, this time i got to choose. in his post on this album,  adam_biedermann highly recommended this album to me for the the next crossover and i decided to trust him. check his post for history and such.


overall this is a pretty dark sounding album. have you ever seen like a Tom & Jerry cartoon when Tom gets drunk or fucked up or it's supposed to be spooky? or like a 70s movie with some sort of freakout scene? a lot of the weirder parts of this album remind me of stuff like that, which is rad.


all in all this was a dope album and i really dug it. another good call by my colleague, another successful crossover. at least on my side...

     This Heat is an experimental rock group from the U.K. they only released 2 full-lengths and this is their debut self-titled album. I guess they never received any major commercial success but have come to be more widely recognized in the music world as a missing link between Progressive rock and genres like post-punk, industrial, post rock, and noise rock. I discovered these guys due to my love of Buck 65 surprisingly. Buck released a mixtape style album a few years back for free that was basically him rapping over various songs from his record collection. That Buck CD opens with a crazy guitar and noise riff that always caught my attention. This heat were credited on the track so I went and downloaded their stuff. The album truly starts with the same flourish of noise from the Buck record on Track 2.
     This Heats genre is hard to pin-point due to how much is happening on this album. They combine a heavy use of tape manipulation and looping with more traditional performances with instruments that run the gamut of heavy distorted punk sounds to just really cool riffs. The songs sometimes are just instrumental rock outs and those give way to eerie soundscapes. There are occasional moments of lyrics on this album that very much made me think of "Thee Silver Mt Zion" so I can have an easy time seeing the post-rock comparison. Overall the album really blew me away. There are so many genres I love represented on this album. The album jumps from rocking to creeping me out in a heart beat. Their tape looping is super well done and when mixed with the rad guitar playing and live drum beats some of their most unique songs are created. Honestly, the ups and downs of this album could be compared to the "Nick Grey and the Random Orchestra" album that we both reviewed. Awesome album, and I hope to check out their other stuff at some point in this project. oksentaminen, you are gonna dig this album for sure, so make sure you put this on your list as a possible crossover.
