The Paper Chase's 2nd full length finds them moving a little bit away from the guitar driven noise rock of the first album and into more of a melodic noise pop area. there's still a lot of guitar on the album but they've brought the piano more to the forefront, along with various other instruments as well. on the first album John Congleton was only credited as guitarist and vocalist while on this album his credits are listed as: vocals, guitars, background vocals, piano, all keyboards, organs, sampling, sequencing, etc, etc, etc. i'm guessing his taking on more instruments has something to do with the expanded sound on this album. whatever the case may be, this is a great album. it's poppier and more melodic while retaining the noisy dissonance and experimentation of the first album while bringing in a darkness that was absent on the first album. Congleton also starts switching up his vocals here, alternating between shouting, singing and a sneering delivery somewhere between the 2. the album also continues with the weird instrumental tracks, however here they're mostly pieces of almost classical sounding music with noise and odd samples layered over them. this was a great album, so many great parts and rad ideas. i'd start here.
